The salaries of health care workers will increase by an average of 183 euros per month.

Monday’s agreement with the unions was preceded by seven weeks of negotiations and demonstrations by medical staff. Some protesters have even been fined for violating the rules on safety distances.

France is one of the worst affected countries in Europe in terms of coronavirus. More than 200,000 infections and 30,000 deaths from the coronavirus have been confirmed in the country.

Historical increase

French Prime Minister Jean Castex described the resulting agreement as “a historic moment for our health system.”

“This is a tribute to those who have been at the forefront of fighting the pandemic,” Castex said.

Most of the pay rise package covers the salaries of nurses, nursing staff, and non-medical staff.

Part of this, around € 450 million, is earmarked for doctors working exclusively in the public sector.
